In 1995, Berlin’s National Gallery acquired an anti-war painting, “The Skat Players”, by the famous German artist Wilhelm Otto Dix. The painting from 1920 shows three crippled and mutilated First World War officers playing a game of cards. And how did the gallery come up with the over 2 million D-Marks to pay for the deal? Most of it was through a donation from the German Federal Government… but the remaining half a million was raised via a celebrity high buy-in skat tournament where the entrants included Eberhard Diepgen, the mayor of Berlin, and a number of wellknown German industrialists.
